He who sings, prays twice.
St. Augustine (354-438 A.D.) first said that, less
succinctly. But the abridged version of his belief about praising
God through music is what most singers remember when they rise in the
choir loft, look at the conductor and take a deep breath before the first
note.
Some in Sacred Heart Adult Choir grew up hearing the
sentence in Catholic school choirs. Others, with no choir
experience, learned of it later. To all, it speaks of a contribution
that comes back to the giver even as it reaches out to the congregation.
Twice a week from September into June, adult choir members
lift their voices in song---rehearsing from 7:30 to 9 p.m. Tuesdays,
supporting parish prayer Sundays at the l0:30 a.m. Mass or at holiday
Vigil Masses. Other times, too--the Mass of Anointing, Forty Hours
and Good Friday services, a concert or two, occasional funerals and
weddings.
"I am astounded at the choir's commitment,"
observes Mary Babin, professional organist whose music has enhanced Sacred
Heart services for 35 years.
Most members would probably say it's not just the music
that is their magnet season after season. Yes, they love to sing and
want to contribute their talents. And when they get the hang of
four-part harmony on a new piece that speaks to their souls--well, any
effort to be there is more than worth it.
But apart from the music, there are the prayers.
Sacred Heart Choir members have a well-deserved reputation for generosity
in praying for one another's petitions. Representing a range of ages
and vocal skills, they act as one family in caring about one another's
concerns
Maleita Olson, music director, sets the mood by opening
each rehearsal with a "choir" prayer themed to the liturgical
season. She ends sessions by calling for prayer petitions on any
topic, plus updates on sick absentees. Then a final prayer,
sometimes sung, sends singers out the door unless they linger to chat.
New singers always are welcome; they are sought-after, she
says--tenors, basses, altos, sopranos. Auditions are not required,
nor is ability to read music.
The director articulates the adult choir's mission:
". . . to support the prayer of the Sacred Heart community through a
music ministry that encourages the congregation to sing, respond and
consciously engage in one active voice of praise."
